This year’s string of catwalk shows and red carpet events gave us a whole host of hair looks to try for ourselves at home. While many celebrities and models sported a collection of weird and wonderful looks throughout the months, there were a few trends which were easy to replicate with a budget. Here are just a few for your viewing pleasure.

The Edie Sedgwick look

While many recent celebs, such as Michelle Williams, Anna Hathaway and Miley Cyrus, have all been working the cropped blonde bob this year, the sixties fashion icon Edie Sedgwick was one of the first to sport the bold look. This year, the designer Marc Jacobs played homage to the star for his spring/summer collections with bleached blonde styles teamed with heavily kohled eyes and thick, dark brows.

The slick pony

Another hair trend which was on point during the first half of the year was the slicked back low ponytail which featured heavily in the catwalk shows. While many designers kept the hair center parted and poker straight, others like Jenny Packham chose a side swept, relaxed look. For extra intrigue, work a small plait or a twisted knot into the look, as seen at the Pamela Rose spring show.

Halo braid

Braids and knots were also a staple during the spring and summer months from the likes Pucci and Fendi. The halo braid, as seen at Pucci, was a particular favourite as the style is simple and versatile. The one simple braid can inject a bit a bohemian vibe into a look – another big trend this year. Use plenty of hair pins and hair spray to secure the braid across the head.

Long waves

While long, tumbling tresses have always been a firm hair favorite in Hollywood, there was a noticeable abundance of 1950’s style glamorous waves worn to the side at this year’s Golden Globe Awards by the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Alba. To create the look, form a side parting in your hair then proceed to form uniform waves using your curling tongs. Finish off the look with a pair of dazzling drop earrings and a bare neckline to elongate your neck.

Volume, volume, volume

Although slick and straight was one on-trend style this year, another trend came in the form of messed up, voluminous shapes by designers such as Derek Lam with his beehive-wearing models. Many women with ultra-fine hair find that chopping their tresses into a mid-length choppy hairstyle with plenty of layers is a perfect way to inject some volume. However, if you don’t want to cut your locks to create volume, there are plenty of mousses, sprays and even wax products which help to add body. Try backcombing your hair at the roots before using a spray.

The twist

A chic and classic twist like this one from fashion house Valentino can be tricky to shape at first, but can be easy to master with a little practice. Use a smooth hair roller as an aid when twisting into shape or get an extra pair of hands to help you out! Secure each side with plenty of pins before moving onto the next section.

Review of L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes

I tend to try mascaras of every price range, mostly because I LOVE a huge voluminous look, and also because mascara is just fun.  I love to layer different brands to see what may surprisingly mesh, and what may turn into a tar-like disaster.

AFTER!

My go-to mascara brand since age 14 has been the impressive L’Oreal.  Their Voluminous line has always delivered the results I expect, and for added length, I have used good old Lash Out with the classic “teddy bear” brush for my first layers.  I am a sucker for new products, so I, of course, had to try L’Oreal’s newest addition to the Voluminous line, Voluminous False Fiber Lashes.  I don’t usually like fiber mascaras, as most tend to be clumpy and flaky for me, but THIS was a dream.  Quick separation, crazy easy to build, and my lashes were not weighed down by the formula.  All in all, I haven’t been this impressed by a mass market mascara in years.  This was not the typical fiber formula that I am used to, and it took half the time to build the volume I wanted.  I am SUPER stoked on this new mascara! Well done L’Oreal, you have impressed a picky artist.
